Play it by ear = 用耳朵玩 ??? No~~~ 那可就大錯特錯了。
英文跟中文一樣會有很多口頭語和俚語，望文生義可是會出糗的喔!!
Play it by ear 其實是：到時候再說吧、隨興所至...等意思。
也就是說，沒有事先計畫、讓事情順其自然發展。
Play (it) by ear 這句話的起源與音樂相關。
本來是指那些會彈鋼琴或演奏某種樂器，但是卻沒有經過專業訓練的人。
或者可說是僅憑之前聽過的印象，不需要看譜就能演奏。
If I could play piano by ear, I wouldn't have to take lessons.
I can play "Yesterday" by ear.
演變到後來就變成生活口頭用語了。
可用在對話中通常被問問題，而因為沒有想那麼遠，
看看下面舉例很容易懂。
一下子不曉得怎樣回答的時候~
Tom: Do you have any plans tonight?
May: No, I'll just play it by ear.
Tom: 你今晚有什麼計畫嗎?
May: 沒有。到時候再說吧!
Ken: What do you say that we go on a vacation in July?
Jane: Well, let's play it by ear.
Ken: Don't you like travel?
Jane: I do. But I'm not sure that I have time this summer.
Ken: 我們七月去渡假你覺得如何?
Jane: 到時候再說吧!
Ken: 你不喜歡旅遊嗎?
Jane: 我喜歡。但是我不確定我這個夏天有空。
對事情的發展沒有特定的方向~
I'll go hiking if the weather is nice tomorrow; but if it's a rainy day, then I'll go see a movie instead. I'll just play it by ear.
明天若天氣好的話我將會去健行；但如果是個下雨天，那我就改去看電影。明天看怎樣再說吧!
